What’s On
St. George’s. During 2010 Christ Church entered into a special the partnership with St. George’s Church in Stamford, based on the Deanery Plan and following a process of consultation between the two churches. St. George’s Church is a large evangelical church of multiple congregations, with about 500 church members worshipping together on a typical Sunday. Rev. Martyn Taylor (the Rector of St. George’s) is shortly to be officially licensed as the Priest-in-Charge at Christ Church, and Rev. Peter Hart is already helping to manage and lead many of the services at Christ Church. St. George’s also seeks to reach out in co-operative social action to meet the many needs of people in and around Stamford. There are many such activities already underway, including:
Care in the Community. This programme is active both within the church family and also in the wider community. Volunteers offer pastoral care to those in need, help with advocacy and provide practical support and advice, ; network with community-based services and with other local organisations, and run programmes for the elderly.
Youth Work. This is centred on the church and its various congregations. Most activities are divided by age into groups run for 11 – 14 year olds (school years 7 – 9) and 14 – 18 year olds (school years 10 – 13). As well as five age-appropriate groups on a Sunday, there are also two youth clubs.
Children’s Work. Every week the Children’s Ministry of St. George’s reaches approximately 200 children. This work is centred on the congregations at St George’s, but also involves outreach to St George’s Primary School and weekday events in George’s Place. The activities include: a Parents and Toddler groups, Seedlings and Tinkers; weekly school assemblies and a lunchtime club called GenR8 at St George’s School; an after-school club on a Friday called the Link; and four children’s church services at St Georges and King’s Café.
In 2011, the two churches appointed an Operations Manager to help sustain and oversee the social and community outreach projects at both Christ Church and St George’s, and to strengthen further the collaboration between the churches and enhance the effectiveness of their work.
